Shougang Olympic Park | This is China

Shougang Olympic Park is one of the documentaries in the This is China series, looking at the redesign of the derelict Shougang steelworks into an advanced, environmentally sound and green 2022 Winter Olympic facility. The Shougang steel plant is almost a hundred years old, a monument to the industrial age. But with high pollution, the plant had to be moved in 2010. The massive plot of land the steelworks used to occupy is known for its scenic views, and it was decided to make a recreational park out of it. When the decision was to include Shougang Park into the Olympic venues, it was clear the whole area needed a serious upgrade. Turning a practically dead site into a thriving ark was very challenging. First of all, most of the facilities had to be rebuilt. Secondly, the reconstruction team decided the 2022 Winter Olympics should go 100% green.
