Liu Chia Liang, or Lau Kar Leung in Cantonese, came from a family of martial arts masters. His father and mentor, Liu Zhan, had been a disciple of Lam Sai-wing, who in turn had learned from Wong Fei-hung. From the age of 7, Liu began his training in martial arts and, during his adolescence, he entered the cinema as an extra and stuntman in action scenes. In the 1950s, he began to obtain small roles in some films in the Wong Fei-hung film series, starring Kwan Tak-hing. During this period, he made friends with Tang Chia, another martial artist, with whom he would form a duo to choreograph action scenes a decade later.
