These two short pieces belong to the genre known as 'consort music', a popular form of domestic music-making in Elizabethan England. Not much is known about the life of Anthony Holborne. He appears to have been born about the year 1545 and to have died, probably in London, in 1602. He published two collections of his music, the one in which these two pieces appear in 1599, containing 65 works, and an earlier one with the title The Cittharn School in 1597 with 58 works.
