Carrying Tibetan flags, also known as “snow lion flags,“ as well as banners with slogans such as “Stop killing in Tibet“ and “Tibetans demand freedom,“ they marched through the city, before holding a rally. On March 10, 1959 a revolt erupted in Lhasa, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, with Tibetans surrounding the palace of their spiritual leader Dalai Lama to protect him against the threats from the Chinese army. The rebellion ultimately failed, driving Dalai Lama into exile.
