This is a recorded Zoom lecture at the MSc level for chemistry students that are interested in molecular photochemistry. It discusses the different aspects that play a role in the Exciplex formation and decay. It links the discovery of excimer formation to exciplex formation and links this to radiative charge recombination in organic solar cell materials as well as perovskites. Examples containing perylene, pyrene and fullerenes are discussed. Learning objectives: • The exciplex can also be called a charge transfer complex. It is especially the emission that characterizes an exciplex. This emission can also be called charge transfer emission. • Intermolecular (or interchromophoric) interactions in the excited state can lead to electronic interactions enabling transfer processes. • Molecules can be used as probes that report information about the properties of their environment, like the polarity, rigidity or viscosity.
