“The Drunken Concubine” is one of the classic representatives by MEI Lanfang, the maestro of Peking Opera. Set in the Tang Dynasty, it tells a story of Concubine YANG Yuhuan who gets drunk when drinking alone on the night the emperor failed to show up. The opera conveys Concubine YANG’s mixed feelings, from expectation to disappointment then to resentment through the graceful singing tones and challenging body movements.
