Now. This Nocturne is easily in my Top 5 of all nocturnes I ever heard and played. In my opinion, Ilyinsky was a very gifted composer. Of course, the main theme is really beautiful and haunting. But then he also manages to give that 'nocturne' feeling by choosing the right harmonies and providing a logical and self-contained structure throughout the piece. What I noticed from his style of composition, is that he really likes the ABA form, which means that in the middle section there is a completely new theme (of course chosen in a way to correspond to the A part), contrasting the A part. In this case there is kind of a folklore melody which is played by chords. We known this style from Chopin's nocturnes, also. I don't remember which he wrote 'religioso' there :) Maybe you know what I mean. Also, from playing some of pieces, I noticed he really likes that transition from C minor to E flat minor...
