Haj pilgrims on Thursday spent the day on Saudi Arabia's Mount Arafat, where the Prophet Mohammad gave his last sermon, raising hands in prayer to atone for their sins, their lips moving behind mandated face masks. On a haj like no other, pilgrims were overcome with emotion as they adhered to social distancing measures while gathering on Mount Mercy on the plains of Arafat for the most important ritual of the pilgrimage. With the coronavirus pandemic making large gatherings impossible, only a few thousand pilgrims - Saudis and foreign residents - were permitted to take part in this years' haj, a once-in-a-lifetime duty for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it.
