A 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit Afghanistan yesterday. The epicenter was in the Hindu Kush region, near the border with Pakistan. Tremors were also felt in a number of other countries, including India. Strong aftershocks were felt in Kabul and the Pakistani capital Islamabad. People ran out of their houses in panic and prayed. Dozens of houses were damaged. The quake has reportedly killed at least 19 people in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Over 200 were injured. Remoteness and difficult terrain slow down the receipt of information about the extent of destruction. It can also slow down relief and rescue efforts. Earthquakes in this region are more likely because it is located at the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
