A playthrough of Hi Tech Expressions' 1993 game for the NES, Mickey's Safari in Letterland. This video shows playing through on all of the difficulty levels. The only real difference is that each of them make the levels slightly more complex and require you to find more letters than the previous level. Mickey's Safari in Letterland is an “edutainment“ title, as the “ages 3-6“ markings on the box would indicate. It's meant to teach basic English literacy by having Mickey explore all sorts of different locales in search of letters. When he finds three letters that spell a word, he wins the stage, and the game will read the letters out and display a picture of whatever it was that they spelled, like “bus“ or “gum.“ The game features quite a bit of digitized voice - not just for the letters, but to encouragement aforementioned children, ages 3-6. Mickey certainly loves to scream “Oh boy!“ as Goofy comes to pick him up for adventure. It even has Ludwig Von Drake congratulating you when you win! Has he been in any other games I wonder... While it's clearly not meant to challenge anyone but kids that are first learning to read, Beam went to a lot of effort to make sure that it was appealing. It's full of bright colors and clear, easily recognizable character sprites, and the sound is eternally bouncy and cheerful. It's much more educational than most games were that purported to teach something at the time, and I could see a small kid today still having fun with it. It's so old that it's probably cool again, especially if they can play it in an emulator on their phone. ______ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
