Join me today as I discuss Antonio Conte, taking a look at his managerial history and his style of management before explaining his tactics, using his title winning Inter Milan and Chelsea side’s as examples. ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: Born in Lecce, Italy in 1969, Antonio Conte is a former professional footballer who played in midfield. An energetic, tenacious and intelligent player, Conte began his career with local side Lecce before he moved to Juventus in 1991, winning 14 major honours in just 13 seasons. After hanging up his boots Conte went straight into coaching, spending a season as the assistant manager at Siena before taking the full job at Arezzo. Conte followed this up with spells at Bari, Siena and Atalanta before getting the Juventus job in 2011. 3 trophy laden seasons later he moved into the international scene, guiding Italy to the quarter finals of Euro 2016. He followed this up with a move to England, winning the 2016/17 Premier League in his first season with Chelsea and the FA Cup the year after. Finally, Conte returned to Serie A and took the Inter Milan job in 2019, ultimately winning the competition in his second season. But at the time of release, Antonio Conte is without a job. ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: Much like Pep Guardiola’s 4-3-3 and Sir Alex Ferguson’s 4-4-2 at Manchester United, Antonio Conte has an iconic system: the 3-5-2. Key to this shape are three ball playing centre backs, a deep-lying playmaker behind two advanced and energetic midfielders and two centre forwards. The wing backs are also key, creating a 3-3-4 in attack as they hold his side’s attacking width before dropping in to create a 5-3-2 without the ball. Conte is very much from the Diego Simeone school of management and he demands hard work, aggression and intensity from every one of his players without exception. Whilst on the counter is where an Antonio Conte team are at their most dangerous, he still has a plan in possession. Often attacking quickly with direct, vertical passing, Conte does use a shorter approach at times to create space to attack higher up the pitch. In the final third Conte likes to create overloads out wide with his outside midfielders and wing backs, creating chances through crosses. Alternatively, he does have his central midfielders link with the forwards and create by playing into his goalscorers. Statman Dave Clips ➡ Whilst the 3-5-2 is Conte’s iconic shape, he’s a very meticulous manager and often makes lots of small tweaks and adjustments to get the best out of his players or to gain an advantage over his opposition. His Chelsea side made great use of the 3-4-3 on their way to the 2016/17 Premier League whilst his title winning Internazionale have seen a midfield tweak, with Nicolo Barella operating from a more advanced position than his other midfield partners. Antonio Conte is analytical, tactically superb and a great motivator but he also improves players on the training ground. Simply put, the Italian is a world class manager with a very intense and aggressive style. Defensively his teams are very solid and organised whilst being very efficient on the counter attack. Whilst his football can be abrasive to some, you can’t argue that he gets results. But what do you think? How good is Antonio Conte? And where do you think he’ll be managing next?
