Asylum applications in the European Union jumped to million in 2023, higher than the migrant crisis nine years ago. Syrians and Afghans remained the largest applicant groups, according to the European Union Agency for Asylum. In the wake of the Israel-Gaza war the number of Palestinians applying for asylum rose to a new high of nearly 11,600. Germany was the leading destination of asylum seekers in the EU, receiving nearly a third of all applications. This data from the EUAA is said to fuel a heated migration debate ahead of EU elections.
