Georges Braque: How he became the Great Cubist Artist - Art History School

French artist Georges Braque, together with Picasso created Cubism. He was born on May 13th, 1882, near Paris, France, and was heavily influenced by his father, an amateur painter, and his grandfather, who ran a house decorating business. Braque's interest in texture and the tactile effects of paint stemmed from this background. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre, studying painting and traditional techniques. In 1899, he moved to Paris and enrolled in the Académie Humbert. While initially drawn to Impressionism, he shifted his focus to the bold colour schemes and compositional structures of Henri Matisse and the Fauvist movement. In 1907, Braque was introduced to Pablo Picasso, leading to a close friendship and artistic collaboration. Together, they pioneered Cubism, a revolutionary style of painting that challenged traditional forms of representation.
