The Remington New Model Army was without a doubt an improvement over the existing colt designs, and looks very much like what we would consider a modern revolver (as much as revolvers can be considered modern). One unique feature of the Remington revolvers was the easily removable cylinder. This has lead to the myth that people could carry loaded spare cylinders and simply swap them on the fly. I will show you why this is inadvisable, and why it wasn't actually done. Addendum:
