“Illusion and Reality,“ the final release from Hua Chenyu's latest album Hope (Hoping and Forgetting), summarizes the theme of the album: the duality of all things in the world. The world is not black and white nor is it monochromatic. It is a mixture of countless contrasting and conflicting things all at once. Almost everyone accepts this mixed up mess, but some people burn up every single brain cell trying to make sense of it. Hua is one of those few. He comes from a privileged background, so he has not been forced to go with the flow. He has lived a lonely life, so his thoughts remain unique. When he engages the world with his child-like simplicity, how weird this world must seem to him. In addition to the confusion he feels, the attack from people who don't try to understand him, the love from people who do, and the preaching he receives (the choir section in the song) adds yet another dimension to the absurdity of the world for him, because it clearly does not match the reality. Will he one day give up his ideals and goes with the flow? He doesn't know. He tries to find things that he can be sure are real, even if they are hostile acts and words. These will be the anchors of his reality. A fun and amazing fact: Hua recorded over a hundred tracks of the choir section himself and compiled them into the final product.
