Today, we explore a song that's not just a melody but a legacy. ‘Tsira’ (Cira, or ცირა in Mingrelian and Georgian, or Цира in Russian) - a traditional Mingrelian song that has enchanted listeners worldwide thanks to a stellar performance by great Eter Kakulia (ეთერ კაკულია in Georgian, Этери Какулия in Russian). Composed by Yakob Bobokhidze, the song’s name means ‘grown daughter’ in Mingrelian - a Kartvelian language spoken in Western Georgia, region of Mingrelia and Abkhazia. Bobokhidze wrote this song in 1977 specifically for Eter Kakulia, who at the time was a soloist at the Georgian State Pop Orchestra 'Rero' and was renowned as one of the most talented singers in Soviet Georgia. You'll find out what Ancient Greeks mythology and Prometheus, God of Fire has to do with Tsira, and we'll try to figure out what a magic power belongs to this music that captivates your heart and soul as soon as you hear these sounds. Whatever the reason, ‘Tsira’ remains a jewel in the crown of Georgian music and enters Top-5 best Georgian songs ever (and for sure the best Mingrelian song ever!)
