Shimoda has 10 beaches with excellent water quality. The city's coastline is famous for its sparkling white sand and the clear water offering perfect conditions for swimming and surfing. Shimoda is speckled with sites of spectacular geological features and scenery, called “geo sites“, such as Tsumekizaki seaside park, the Ryugukutsu sea cave, and Ebisu-jima Island. You will be overwhelmed by the magnificence of nature! Shimoda Port boasts Japan’s best catch rate for kinmedai (splendid alfonsino). Whether boiled in sweetened soy sauce, as sashimi or sushi, even as hamburgers and pizza, Shimoda's restaurants feature kinmedai dishes in various genres. Commodore Matthew Perry landed in Shimoda with the U.S. Black Ship fleet in 1854 at the end of the Edo period. His arrival led to the opening of self-isolated Japan. Many historical sites throughout the city tell the story of those days. Also, the namako-kabe (sea cucumber) wall houses, with their eye-catching white and black lattice pattern, create a unique atmosphere. ℹ️ Shimoda Tourist Association 一般社団法人 下田市観光協会 81-558-22-1531
