Outnumbered, outgunned, the crew of the USS Samuel B Roberts made a heroic last stand during the Battle of Samar, 1944. It disabled one Japanese heavy cruiser with a torpedo, and then heavily damaged another. All the while, frustrating the enemy, drawing them out of position allowing others to advance. Then, it’s ammunition was spent, and still it fought, letting off smoke shells and illumination rounds. But, mostly defenseless, it took a hit from the battleship Yamato and sank, taking with her 89 of her 224-man crew. Now, 6,895m below the surface of the Philippine Sea, the wreck of the ‘Sammy B’ has been discovered, and it’s the deepest shipwreck ever discovered. Few places outside of deep-sea trenches are so deep, and yet there lies the remarkably preserved wreck discovered by Texas adventurer and investor (who happens to own his own deep-sea submarine, Limiting Factor) Victor Vescovo.
