We set this to music in honor of the Beltane festival and the coming of spring..... Spring has come/ to the earth ,the land is fertile /and ready at /Beltane, seeds will be sown and new life will begin once more. Hail, great gods of the land! Hail, gods of resurrected life! Hail, Cernunnos, Heil Osiris, heil Herne, and Bacchus! Beltane or Beltaine (literally “bright fire“, i.e. “bonfire“), is an ancient Gaelic pagan festival which is celebrated between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice, i.e. around May 1st. Bealtaine is also the name of the month of May in Irish, as well as being traditionally considered the day that marks the beginning of summer in Ireland. Gaelic sources of the tenth century, state that the druids lit bonfires on the top of the hills, led them through the cattle of the village to purify it and as a sign of good luck. People also crossed the fires, for the same purpose. In Druidism, Beltane indicates one of the eight holidays linked to the cycle of the seasons. In Wicca Beltane or Beltaine means one of the eight sabbaths, celebrated on May 1st. Although the festivity takes up some aspects of the Gaelic festival, it seems more linked to the Germanic celebration of Calendimaggio, both for the meaning of a fertility festival and for the rituals. Beltaine is celebrated with a ritual representation of the relationship between the Goddess and the God.
