The biblical legend of the thief and murderer Barabbas, who was pardoned by Pontius Pilate. There was such a tradition in ancient Judea, when spectators present at mass executions, which were a kind of show, held in the presence of a huge crowd, could choose at their own will one criminal they liked and release him from death. On that occasion the people chose Barabbas.
