Natural disaster 4 August 2024 A sudden and severe flood originating from the mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia has washed away a significant portion of a bridge in Jazan Province. The local news channel broadcasted dramatic footage showing two vehicles being swept away by the powerful floodwaters. One of the vehicles was completely crushed by the collapsing bridge support, highlighting the intensity of the flood. Several people sustained injuries as a result of the bridge collapse at a crucial intersection far from the city of Jazan. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud crash as the bridge gave way under the pressure of the water. The National Center for Meteorology has issued warnings of more heavy rains expected in Jazan Province in the coming days. Meteorologists have also predicted severe thunderstorms in the mountainous regions, increasing the risk of further flooding. The flooding and heavy rains have severely affected the northern regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, causing widespread disruption. Many roads have been closed, and authorities have canceled in-person classes in schools to ensure the safety of students and staff. The meteorological services of Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, have issued strong advisories against travel due to the hazardous conditions. This flooding incident comes just days after similar sudden floods hit the southeastern regions of neighboring UAE and Oman.
