A much-changed Everton side bowed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties for the second season in a row after a 1-1 draw with Southampton at Goodison Park. Despite being short of options due to illness and injuries, the Blues created a host of chances throughout, taking a deserved lead on 20 minutes through Abdoulaye Doucoure’s close-range header. Saints skipper Taylor Harwood-Bellis levelled with a header of his own just beyond the half-hour mark, but Everton had plenty of opportunities to win the contest, with Jesper Lindstrøm wondering how he didn’t get off the mark for the Toffees. It meant the tie was decided on penalties and, after the first 11 spot-kicks were converted, Ashley Young saw his effort saved by Alex McCarthy to see the visitors prevail 6-5.
