Grant Shapps, the Defence secretary, has said there is “potential evidence of failings” from a contractor hired by the Ministry of Defence to run the armed forces payment network which was targeted in a suspected cyber-attack from China. He said a specialist review of the contractor is underway. Addressing the House of Commons, he said the cyber-attack “was the suspected work of a malign actor” which compromised a “contractor-run network”. Mr Shapps told MPs: “This incident is further proof the UK is facing rising and evolving threats. We cannot rule out state involvement from elsewhere.” He said that in a “small number of cases”, addresses and bank details were hacked.
