The European Union has again been at loggerheads over whether gas prices should be capped, with member states meeting for nearly 10 hours without resolving their differences. Hungary, which had previously voted against the EU’s aid package for Ukraine, once again expressed its discontent with the EU. The EU held a meeting of energy ministers, but the meeting failed to agree on a mechanism to limit the rise in gas prices and the EU will consider the issue again. The meeting lasted nearly 10 hours and the member states still did not discuss the outcome, reflecting the serious differences between countries on the gas price limit scheme. Germany, Austria and the Netherlands are opposed to a gas price cap, arguing that it would disrupt the functioning of the energy market. However, there are also EU member states that support the price cap proposal, including Greece, Belgium, Italy and Poland, but they have different views on the final price cap to be set.
