Six years work, 110 foot high model of five marines and one navy medical corpsman putting the flag on the first Japanese territory captured, based on the famous picture by photographer Joe Rosenthal. Sculptor Felix de Weldon is using the three survivors of the team and photographs of the other men for his 32 foot high figures. The plaster model weighs over 100 tons. The finished bronze figures, the largest of their type in the world will be the first national memorial to the Marine Corps heroes of all wars. CU.
