Before there were records, there were cylinders. The groove went around the outside of the cylinder and the needle/stylus slowly went across the cylinder as it spun around. Just like Thomas Edison invented it. This is the great-grandpappy of the record player. Edison made disc records and machines to play them starting about 1912, but he continued to make cylinder records and machines up until about 1929, well into the disc record era. This machine has an upgraded Model 'C' reproducer and carriage. The horn is a modern reproduction. I don't have many old style cylinders to play on this yet. Might post a few more in the future. It's kind of awesome to listen to what was high-tech 115 years ago, just like folks did back then. BTW, these early machines are pretty hard to find these days.
