The accident, which occurred just hours before their sister’s wedding, has left the hockey community and their family in deep mourning. The Fatal Accident The devastating incident took place on Thursday evening, around 8:19 p.m., on a county road in Oldmans Township, a quiet community located in southern New Jersey near the Delaware River. Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, were out for a bike ride when a Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 43-year-old Sean Higgins, attempted to overtake two slower-moving vehicles. In a tragic twist, the SUV struck both brothers, leading to their untimely deaths. The New Jersey State Police quickly arrived at the scene to investigate the incident. According to State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron, the driver, Sean Higgins, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Consequently, Higgins was charged with two counts of death by auto, a serious offense that reflects the gravity of the situation. Higgins was taken into custody and is currently being held without bond at the Salem County Correctional Facility. As of Friday morning, no attorney information had been listed for Higgins, leaving many questions unanswered about the legal proceedings that will follow. An Unimaginable Loss for the Gaudreau Family The loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau is particularly heart-wrenching given the timing of the tragedy. The brothers were scheduled to serve as groomsmen at their sister’s wedding, which was set to take place in Philadelphia on Friday afternoon. The wedding, which was meant to be a joyous celebration of love and family, has now been overshadowed by unimaginable grief. In a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook, Jim Gaudreau, the brothers’ uncle, expressed the family’s profound sorrow. “Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons and brothers-in-law, two nephews, two cousins, two family members, two teammates, two friends, but truly two amazing humans,“ he wrote.
