SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Koto Sadamura, curator: “What was revolutionary about Kyosai's art is the fact that he combined the two different modes of paintings because in the previous period, in Tokugawa period, these two were completely separate, they were not to be mixed. But by combining the two he really overcame the traditional hierarchy in art and conventionalities in the world of Japanese art and that really became the painting of the new era.“ 6
