Ethiopia Eyes Regional Electrification as Key to Stability and Economic Ties The country harbors “huge ambitions“ to electrify Eastern and Southern Africa, aiming to interconnect regional power pools and ultimately supply electricity to South Africa, according to Ethiopian State Minister of Water and Energy, Dr. Eng. Sultan Welle Ahmed. “Ethiopia is actually playing a significant role in electrifying the whole region,“ Dr. Ahmed stated in an interview with Sputnik Africa, emphasizing that the primary goal is fostering economic and cultural ties, rather than solely boosting revenues. ️ Ethiopia is already interconnected with Sudan and plans further links to Egypt, Jordan, and onward to Europe. To achieve these goals, the country is actively seeking private sector engagement in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
