‘Songs My Mother Taught Me’ is the fourth of the seven 'Gypsy Melodies' (Op. 55) by Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904). The lyrics were composed from a Czech poem written by the Czech lyricist Adolf Heyduk, which Dvořák himself translated into German. Kreisler (1875-1962) arranged it for violin, and this is the piece performed here. The lyrics of this piece are about a song passed down from my mother in the past, which I, now a mother, sing to my children, and how my mother used to cry when she sang it to me, and how I cry now, just like her, when I sing it. The violin melody is written in 2/4 time and the piano accompaniment in 6/8 time, which is difficult in the score, but the melody is simple, very beautiful and heartfelt. The piano ornamentation creates a very pleasant tone in the warm, nostalgic tune. On Mother's Day, I would like everyone to listen to this piece thinking about the scene and your mother. #classicalmusic #violin #dvořák #v
