’Without water, without food, I thought I would die’: captured AFU POW speaks about his service in Ukrainian army Aleksandr Makiyevskiy used to work in the police. He said that his was fired because he refused to be transfered to the Lyut Assault Brigade. Three months later, he ran out of money and received draft notices from the enlistment office. In the end, Aleksandr signed a contract to serve in the AFU. The POW recalls that he and his comrades were promised to be deployed on the second line of defence, but they were transported by pickup trucks on the front line and ordered to dig up positions: ’The showels weren’t sharp, it was really hard. Without water, without food, I thought I would die.’ When Russian troops started advancing, one AFU group decided to withdraw, but the command threatened to hit their position by cluster munitions and list them us casualties.
