This week’s BobBlast is about the composition design we call “Tension.” Visual Tension is best described as a balance, or dance between conflicting parts in your painting - like color, value, form, shape, line and texture. The tension composition can cause anxiety, as well as excitement. The tension composition is like… Watch out! Something is about to happen! With certain color combinations and certain designs, the painter can make the viewer feel uneasy. That may be the point of the painting… and there’s tension in the air. The black and white paintings behind me on the studio wall are my examples of graphic visual tension. Two are “falling boxes” and one painting is a frightful tension of a gigantic shape crashing down on a tiny shape.
