Original Springfield Model 1816 musket made at Springfield Armory in 1823 for the US Army. These muskets were .69 caliber, or roughly 16 gauge. I was using buck & ball cartridges made to original US Army spec, but loaded with less powder to be gentle on this 200 year old gun. .69 caliber was standardized during and after the Revolutionary War due to the massive number of Charleville muskets bought and given to the US from France. The US Army's muskets would all be mostly based on the Charleville into the mid-1800s, and many would be updated to caplock and used in the Civil War.
