This creature died on the slide, after regurgitating violently through its centrally-located mouth. Is this part of the normal egg-laying process? I have read that some flatworms release their eggs by rupture of the parent’s body. Before the creature died, its egg capsule seems to have become stuck. Either it was wedged under the coverslip, or the stalked egg was “deliberately“ glued to one of the glass surfaces. Interestingly, the Gyratrix filmed by Algalia32 seems to be in exactly the same predicament: Gyratrix has both male and female reproductive organs. As it was dying, the Gyratrix extended its hard penis stylet several times, affording us a close look at this interesting structure. The egg capsule has a stalk at one end, which is designed to be attached to a fixed surface until the egg hatches.
