Traditional Nubian arr. Alsarah & the Nubatones Alsarah & the Nubatones Alsarah, lead vocals Nahid, backing vocals Brandon Terzic, oud Rami El Aasser, percussion/backing vocals Mawuena Kodjovi, bass/trumpet/backing vocals In 2018, MetLiveArts partnered with the World Music Institute to present three of the most creative, expressive female singers/songwriters hailing from Muslim-majority homelands. Though each presented music inspired by different places and events, together they issued a powerful call for freedom, unity, and peace. Founded in 2011, Alsarah & the Nubatones were born out of many dinner conversations between Alsarah and Rami El Aasser about Nubian “Songs of Return,” modern migration patterns and the cultural exchanges between Sudan and Egypt. Under the leadership of Alsarah, the Brooklyn based group’s sound grew into what they have dubbed “East African retro-pop.” Here, Alsarah & the Nubatones perform their signature arrangement of “Nuba Noutou,” a Nubian song traditional to the Mahas populations of southern Egypt and northern Sudan. Recorded at “Women’s Voices” on Saturday, March 24, 2018 in The Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, The Met Fifth Avenue. “Women’s Voices” was made possible by the Art Jameel Fund and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. “Women’s Voices” was presented in collaboration with the World Music Institute.
