Emil Erich Kästner (23 February 1899 - 29 July 1974) was a German author, poet, screenwriter and satirist, known primarily for his humorous, socially astute poetry and for children's books'. He had strong antimilitarist opinions. The present poem dates from 1928 and is inspired by Goethe's poem 'Kennst du das Land, wo die Zitronen blühn?' (first published 1795) Kennst du das Land, wo die Zitronen blühn, Im dunklen Laub die Gold-Orangen glühn, Ein sanfter Wind vom blauen Himmel weht, Die Myrte still und hoch der Lorbeer steht, Kennst du es wohl?
