From the Album: BadNews Travels Fast, Year of Release: 2024#blues#bluesrock Lyrics: A Bluesman Can't Cry Chris “Badnews” Barnes is a multi-talented comedian, television writer (Saturday Night Live), film actor, bar owner (Flaming Saddles in New York), martial arts instructor and now a blues singer and songwriter. Chris “Badnews” Barnes has three albums to his name. Badnews travels fast is his latest album and on it he collaborates with well-known blues names such as Jimmy Barnes (2 tracks), Walter Trout (1), Sugar Ray Rayford (1) and top producer Tom Hambridge. The album opens with the four songs with the guest musicians, and that immediately sucks you into the album. The triple duet of Chris Barnes, Sugar Ray and Tabitha Fair is very catchy. Walter's guitar playing is worldly, but that is no surprise, and with Jimmy Hall it is swinging when he starts playing his harmonica. This Jimmy Hall adds depth to the instant blues classic 'A Bluesman Can't Cry' with his harmonica. An intensely coherent tune in the best tradition of BB King, deep Hammond sounds and excruciating guitar work characterize the song. In the vocals, Chris Barnes omits line swagger and delivers his singing in a measured manner without pomposity. He continues the rest of the album with his own band in the form of swinging forties/fifties dance hall-like 'The juice aint worth the squeez'. 'BluesBaller Baby' swings like the Blues brother in their best years. You can recognize ZZ Top's drive in 'His majesty the Baby', both in the song structure and the vocals. 'Ambush by the blues' one of the top tracks, a desolate highway song, you see the highway in front of you with deserted villages where you can just get lost in nothing. Under the leadership of Tom Hambridge, Chris “Badnews” Barnes delivers a well-varied blues rock album with fine songs and top production, partly thanks to the guest performances.
