This short video shows some footage from a recent dojo session where I was introducing bunkai from the start of Pinan / Heian Godan to some kyu grades, and then showing how it can be paired with methods from Pinan / Heian Yodan. Once the method, and the principles on which the method is based, are understood by the student, we quickly contextualise it giving the student free reign to putting things before and after the sequence. We can then show how the method fits with others from the same kata / kata series and which would be appropriate when. That helps them understand the kata as a system, and not simply a “bag of tricks”. Finally, they can start to test and apply what they have learnt in “kata based sparring” (i.e. live drills based on the mythology of the kata within a self-defence context, as opposed to the methods one may use in a consensual duel with a fellow martial artist; which are also trained). What is shown in this video is technical instruction in the early stages of that process. However, you can bet your bottom dollar that some folks won’t read this – probably the same ones who complain when I give a head and shoulders instruction in the video itself – and therefore they may misunderstand what is been shown :-) I hope you enjoy the video!
