Entering service in 1938, the Westland Lysander was initially used in the army co-operation role, providing artillery spotting, reconnaissance and light bombing duties. Despite some initial success in the early stages of the Second World War, the army quickly determined that the aircraft was unsuitable for this role, being too fast for artillery spotting, too slow to evade enemy fighters and too big and heavy to conceal on the ground. It was replaced in this co-operation duty by aircraft such as the Tomahawk and Mustang as the war progressed, but due to the excellent short take off and landing qualities of the Lysander, it found a use with special operations. Earning a place in military history for being the aircraft that could deploy and extract agents from occupied countries during clandestine activities.
