Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world A powerful tropical storm has hit the Philippines, causing catastrophic, widespread flooding in the northern regions of the country. Storm Trami, known in the Philippines as Kristine, brought heavy rainfall and hurricane-force winds of up to 59 mph (95 km/h) and gusts of up to 99 mph (160 km/h). The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said more than 1 million people in the country were affected by the storm. Tens of thousands were forced to flee their homes due to heavy rains and subsequent landslides and flooding. Videos and photos from the hardest-hit areas showed some communities flooded up to their roofs. “People have been waiting for help on their roofs for 24 hours. Many of our rescue vehicles are stuck due to flooding,“ Maria Leonor Robredo, former vice president of the country, wrote on social media. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center said the tropical cyclone initially developed west of Guam before making landfall in the northern Philippines. Government officials warned that heavy rainfall ahead of the tropical storm, as well as previous cyclones earlier in the month, made the region particularly vulnerable to flash flooding. Government agencies have not yet released estimates of the damage, but it is expected to be significant as hundreds of communities face widespread flooding. #flood #Philippines #storm
