Visit Visit our website This black-and-white film “Felicia“ tells the first-person narrative of a Black high school student, Felicia, living in the Watts neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. It was shot just a few months before the Watts Riots broke out. Felicia speaks on the challenges of living in a segregated community in LA in the 1960s and expresses her hopes for a future of changed narratives. The narrator speaks often about the importance of an education in advancing one's lot in life. This groundbreaking film was produced by Stuart Roe, and the filmmakers are Bob Dickson, Alan Gorg, and Trevor Greenwood. Felicia was selected into the United States National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2014, being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant“. Their mother is doing dishes by the kitchen sink (03:30). She is sewing dresses on a sewing machine (04:00). Felicia walks to school (05:06). Her class says the Pledge of Allegiance (05:39). Then the class begins (05:53). The hallways of Felicia’s school are crowded with students in between classes (07:04). Students are spending recess in the schoolyard (07:12). Felice speaks to the camera about a previous school she went to where most students enrolled were Caucasian (07:41). Students conversing during recess (08:23). Students playing basketball (08:46) and playing tennis (08:56). All students exit the school at the end of the school day (09:01). Felicia walks home (09:16). She walks past a car salvage-lot (10:01). A small boy is riding his bike in a backyard next to the salvage-lot (10:45). A mother and three children are sitting on their front porch (10:58). Scenes from the neighborhood by the salvage-lot (11:03). Men from the neighborhood, hang out on the streets and playing checkers, there is a sort of skid row appearance to some areas (11:25). Felicia walks along the train tracks and talks about her hope that her generation escapes their parents' situation (11:55).
