A bus carrying mostly school children skidded off a road and plunged into a river in northwestern Syria on June 6, killing at least seven people and injuring 20 more, emergency responders said. A mangled white school bus laid on its side in the river as dozens of people swam near the vehicle, footage released by a local civil defence organization White Helmets showed. Rescuers scrambled over rocks on the cliffside to search for survivors, while medical personnel tended to the victims, images from the video also showed. The bus was on a school trip when the vehicle went off the road in the Ayoun Ara area, west of the city of Idlib, and fell into Orontes River, a statement from the White Helmets said. It was not immediately clear what caused the bus to go off the road.
