Algerians paid a high price for their freedom from France. During the war for independence, around one and a half million people perished. The colonisers conducted ‘revenge operations’ against civilians and heavily mined vast areas of the African country. Only the USSR helped Algeria overcome one of the most tragic chapters in its history. Soviet sappers defused 1.5 million mines, making 120 thousand hectares of land safe. Our video tells this story of heroism. Learn more about Russia and Algeria’s warm relations in the film ‘Bridges to the East: Algeria’.
