Moryatnik or “Moriya“ is an unfinished complex for teaching children to swim, designed by the honored architect of the RSFSR E.I. Levitan, the most famous abandoned building in Volgograd. It is located in the Central District in the valley of the Tsaritsa River, between the Astrakhan bridge and the railway. The unofficial names “Moria” and “Sailor”, which have become commonly used, according to one version, come from the word “sea”, and according to another, they were assigned to the building by Tolkienists in honor of Moria, a huge underground city invented by J. R. R. Tolkien in the Misty Mountains of Middle-earth inhabited by dwarves. In the late 1970s - early 1980s, at the expense of budgetary funds, the construction of the building began. By 1991, the building had not been completed. In 1992, the section of the valley of the Tsaritsa River, on which, among other things, Moryatnik was located, was given the status of a specially protected area. The building changed owners several times. Initially Moryatnik was in municipal ownership. In the 90s, it was transferred to a commercial organization. In 2004, by order of the Moscow company Konti LLC, the chief architect of the Volgograd region Alexander Vyazmin and the head of the regional inspection of architectural and construction supervision Mikhail Norkin created a project for the construction of the Tsaritsa floodplain. The sailor house was supposed to be completed and used as a swimming pool. The murder, which was widely publicized in the media, took place in Moryatnik on June 6, 2008. According to one version, Alexei Matasov was sent to the store for alcohol. When it turned out that the guy spent more on buying alcohol than he was told, he was killed. According to another version, the reason for the murder was the disappearance of 500 rubles from the bag of one of the suspects and the unwillingness of Alexei Matasov to return them. Carrying the body to the basement, the killers remained where they were, continuing their drinking. A couple of weeks later, one of them covered the corpse with tires and set it on fire. The charred skeletonized corpse was discovered by chance, by young people, more than a month later - on July 15, 2008. In 2008, after the widely publicized murder on the territory of Moryatnik, the prosecutor of the Central District promised through the court to achieve the conservation of the building, the installation of a fence and the organization of security, and the head of the city’s police department informed about the decision to take measures to establish police control on the territory of an abandoned unfinished building. However, none of the above was accomplished. Also this year, a project was proposed for the development of the floodplain of the Tsaritsa River, which involves the demolition of the building. The project was not implemented subsequently. In 2012, on behalf of the governor, the inspectorate of the State Construction Supervision for the Volgograd Region began to find out the ownership of abandoned buildings on the territory of Volgograd, including Moryatnik. At present, the owner of the superstructured building and the land plot has not been identified. In 2013, the section of the floodplain of the Tsaritsa River, on which Moryatnik is located, lost its conservation status. In 2013, public hearings were held on the development project for the floodplain of the Tsaritsa River, according to which the Moryatnik was supposed to be reconstructed and a water amusement park located nearby. Among the reasons for the popularity of the building: a mystical halo, convenient location in the city center, privacy, free access (the ruins are not fenced even after the sensational murder). Attracts with its appearance and accessibility lovers of photo shoots. Specialists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations held classes in the Moryatnik to develop the skills of saving people. There were trainings of the FSB special forces in the city of Volgograd and the Volgograd region and OMON. Reenactments of military events were carried out, where Moryatnik played the role of the Central Department Store of Volgograd, in which Field Marshal Paulus was captured. Meeting point for roleplayers. Gathering airsoft and paintball players. On the walls of the building, clubs of climbers and mountain tourism conduct training. Rope jumping enthusiasts gather. Moryatnik is a favorite and widely known place among various Volgograd subcultures, such as: punks, goths, satanists, tolkienists and others. Firemen also gather in the Moryatnik and fire shows are held. Moving around in the Moryatnik, even during daylight hours, is dangerous and can lead to accidents.
