A supercell is a type of thundercloud characterized by the presence of a mesocyclone, a medium-scale rotating ascending air current. Of the four types of thunderstorms according to Western classifications (supercell, linear multicell (squall lines), cluster multicell, and single cell), supercells are the least common and may pose the greatest danger. Supercells are often isolated from other thunderstorms and can have a front span of up to 32 kilometers.
