The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest typhoon alert warning for Kagoshima prefecture on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's main islands. Local authorities has urged 2 million people to seek shelter or evacuate as a powerful and potentially destructive super typhoon bears down on the country. Level four evacuation instructions were in place for people in Kagoshima, Kumamoto and Miyazaki in the southern Kyushu region. Nanmadol, classified as a super typhoon by the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center, has the potential to be the most destructive tropical storm to strike Japan in decades. Hundreds of weekend flights in the southern region were being cancelled, causing confusion among passengers travelling over the long weekend.
