Distal radius fractures, in the forearm near the wrist, are the most common type of fracture. In many cases they can be easily reduced, but when they cannot be restored to their normal position an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) procedure is required. A plate is used to stabilize the fracture which restores function and relieves pain. Following surgery, a splint or cast is worn for four to six weeks for support during the healing process.
