The democratic, capitalist United States and the communist Soviet Union were the two greatest powers in the world at the time of this conflict, which came to be known as the Cold War. Space emerged as a dramatic new battlefield for this conflict in the late 1950s, as both sides competed to demonstrate the superiority of their political-economic systems, technologies, and military might.
