Rupert Hartick - Tribal Tool | Konfus Records Coming direct from Frankfurt, the fourth EP on the excellent Konfus label is another exquisite example of deep electronic music, excellently produced while aimed squarely at the dancefloor. A joint effort from Matthias Schildger & Rupert Hartick, it showcases real class in sound and execution throughout. The opener comes under the artist name CNTRL, with the title of 'Lose Control' and it's a fantastic percussive groove, landing a little in the minimal camp in terms of clicky percs, but incredibly deep too, with an off-beat drum pattern and a bassline which is so low that it feels as if it's below you, rather than coming through the speakers. Subtle pads sit softly in the background, just clear enough to work like an audio glue holding the sounds together in unison, before a closing section to the track where the beats vanish and a metallic vocal reminds us that 'music makes you lose control'. For any DJ who claims to dig the deeper sounds, this is simply so good that you MUST check it out and add it to your collection. Rupert Hartick delivers the first of his two tracks on the EP with 'No Flash', which is the A2 cut. Another for the trippy sets, this builds around hollow metallic delayed percussive elements, a subby bassline running through the track, all the while the zappy FX sounds work in and around the drums. Perhaps a good description for this track would be a 'linker', one for the DJs who play for several hours and especially into the early hours, where tracks like this come into their own, providing a bridge between the tougher parts of your set, giving some space but keeping things moving in a superbly spacey fashion. Onto the B-side and Matthias, simply calling himself M.S., brings us 'Tranceparents'. Fear not that this is anything akin to 'trance' of the late 90s/early 00s style, the word trance is perfect to describe the mood here. The tracks drums shuffle and sway, the bassline flows wonderfully and the synths and pads slink through the track as it builds. Added snares give the vibe a real urgency, but this retains a 'heads down, hips grooving' flow, all the while making your head woozy with delight. As with the two cuts on the A-side, this is one for the real deep DJs and clubbers alike. For Rupert's second track on the EP, which rounds off this brilliant 12“, he layers the sounds for 'Tribal Tool'. As one would expect, the focus is on the drums, but with the added bonus of wobbly bass action and some delayed FX which rise and pan throughout the track. If getting your dancefloor locked in to a groove is how you like to play, then this track is 100% for you. The main spacey perc continues throughout the track, the volume altering as it moves through the speakers, inaudible vocals being used almost as FX, all adding to the groove. And what a groove! Deep heads, you need this EP in your lives, that's an order.
