A simulation of the intake flow into an internal combustion engine. On the left is the inlet valve, exhaust on the right. This study compared the performance of a recently patented helical valve to a conventional valve with CFD using the LES turbulence Model. The two cases used Star-CCM as the CFD package and had a combined run time of 240 hours on a Linux cluster. The Large Eddy Simulation model was chosen due to LES having a reduced calculation time compared to other models whilst reproducing accurate flow characteristics, with cycle-to-cycle variation levels being similar to experimental data. The engine geometry was based on a Ducati 999R as it has the same sized valves as the test helical valves produced. Both cases used a poppet valve for the exhaust in order to maintain constant Internal Exhaust Gas Recirculation (IEGR). If the IEGR varies between cases this leads to an unfair comparison between different intake valves. The project was validated by using Star-CCM to recreate experimental data on l
